Information on Derby Station

Derby station was built in 1839-41 for Midland Counties, Birmingham & Derby Junctions and North Midland Railways, designed by architect Francis Thompson. It was rebuilt in 1872 and again in 1881, then partially rebuilt in 1972 and 1985 and then major renovations taking place between 2005-2009.
All three of the original railways had an engine an engine shed at Derby, that of the NMR being incorporated in the Midland's locomotive works to which a separate carriage and wagon works was added in the 1870s. Derby Works pioneered the construction of diesel locomotives, with BR adding Technical Centre's design and research function to the other Derby activities.

The Locomotive Works was mostly demolished. Along with land formerly occupied by Chaddesden sidings and the gas works, it was renamed 'Pride Park', part of which is now occupied by the Derby County Football Club stadium.
The Carriage and Wagon Works in Litchurch Lane remains in production, and it has continued building diesel and electrical multiple units, and is said to be the only remaining specialist British train manufacturer.
