Information on Crewe Station
Crewe Railway station opened in 1837 and was truly unique, and has set many 'first'. It was the first railway station in the world to have its own railway hotel (The Crewe Arms, 1838, still in use today). It was the first to be completely rebuilt owing to the need for expansion. It was the first to form a junction between more than two companies and it was the first to have a completely independant railway system built around it, to ease traffic congestion.
Crewe was the original Grand Junction station lying on the West Coast Main Line, 158 miles north of London Euston and 243 miles South of Glasgow Central, its purpose was to link up the four largest cities of England by joining up existing railway routes which included, Liverpool and Manchester Railway, London and Birmingham Railway.
A modern passenger entrance containing a ticket office and bookshop. Passengers access the platforms via a footbridge, stairs and lifts. Buildings dating back to the 19th century containing two or more bookshops, bars, buffets and waiting rooms occupy the platforms. The last time Crewe received an update was back in 1985, this resulted in the entire track layout being remodelled along with the station facilities being updated during a three-month period. In 2007 Network Rail published a proposal to build a new station 1 mile south of the present station as it claimed the existing station would be at a capacity of 125% by the mid 2020s, the new station would have a more efficient track layout with less conflicting movements. These proposal remain controversial in the area, and were still subject to consultation in the latter part of 2008.
Crewe Works:
At its height it employed over 20,000 people, by 2005 fewer than 1,000 remained on site with more cutbacks or even closure possible. Current work at the site is now focused on general maintenance, and the inspection of seriously damaged stock, with much of the site being sold off, and now occupied by a supermarket, leisure park and a large new health centre.
Crewe Diesel Traction Maintenance Depot
or
Crewe Diesel TMD:
Situated to the south of and visable from Crewe railway station, is the site of the former diesel-electric locomotive Traction Maintenance Depot now owned by EWS and reduced to just a yard for storing surplus rolling stock, a shadow of its former self as it once had an extensive history for assessing, maintaining, repairing, storing and scrapping diesel-electric locomotives.
Crewe Electric Traction Maintenance Depot
or
Crewe Electric TMD:
The depot is situated to the north of Crewe railway station, on the south side of the Crewe to Chester railway line opposite Crewe Works on Victoria Avenue and now owned by EWS.
