Information on Chester Station

Chester General opened  on 1 August 1848 and was a joint venture between the Chester and Holyhead Railway, Chester and Crewe Railway, and the Birkenhead Railway, these were later to become the London and North Western Railway and the Great Western railway, it replaced at least two earlier termini of the railway companies concerned.

Chester General's frontage was designed by Francis Thompson. To help deter the feral pigeons, carved wooden owls can be seen strategically placed in the high roof beams.

Arriva Trains Wales made improvements to the station that for many years had been in a neglected state, these included new ticket barriers that came in to use in July 2006, new travel centre, new customer information screens, a Costa Coffee outlet and new bicycle stands.  Christine Russel MP for Chester unveiled a plague on 3131 October 2008 at the station.

Chester General has 7 platforms.

Platform 1: Bay platform located at the east end and used for an hourly Chester to Crewe Shuttles.

Platform 2: Bay platform located at the wset end and used by trains heading towards Cardiff/Birmingham via Wrexham and Shrewsbury.

Platform 5: Bay Platform for Mid Chester Line used by Northern Rail.

Platform 6: Bay Platform for Mid Chester Line used by Northern Rail.
