Information on Carlisle Citadel Station

Carlisle's first railway dates from 19 July 1936 when the Newcastle & Carlise Company's line was opened as far as Blenkinsop Colliery and in 1838 it was opened throughout to Carlisle terminating at Carlisle London Road.

On September 1 1847 Carlisle Citadel Station which had been designed by Sir William Tite to match the city walls and Citadel law courts opened and began to be used by more and more companies.

1851 saw the arrival of the Glasgow & South Western and Maryport & Carlisle companies, followed in 1862 by North British Trains from Hawick.

Midland's new Settle & Carlisle main line services joined from 1 May 1876.

Due to the extra traffic the Citadel Station Committee undertook a £380,000 route modelling and station enlargemnet scheme, this came into use on 4 July 1880 adding an island platform to the main platform. A glazed roof in harmony with the Gothic style of the original frontage was also added.
More platforms were added with the arrival of the Furness Railway in 1881.

Other alterations include the  1973 power signal box, the new ticket office and information office in 1988. The main entrance remains on the Up side

Carlisle railway station is on the West Coast Main Line junction with the Newcastle and Whitehaven Lines, 102 miles south of Glasgow Central station and 299 miles north of London Euston Station.
