Cambridge station opened in 1845 by Eastern Counties Railways and was designed by architect Francis Thompson and is listed as Grade II.
At 514 yards (470 m) Cambridge has the third longest platform in England behind Colchester and Gloucester stations, and was rebuilt in 1850, 1863 and again in 1908 and in 1987 it was refurbished by BR.
Cambridge station is located on the former GER mainline to Kings Lynn, junction with lines to Hitchin and Ipswich and 55 ¼ miles from London Liverpool Street.
Cambridge station is unusual in having just one long platform for its main line services, Up trains using a midway Double-crossover to get to the London end. Cambridge has six platforms including the double length one and two bays. Several routes start from Cambridge which include the West Anglian Main Line to London Liverpool Street,
Fen Line to Kings Cross, Breckland Line to Norwich, services to Ipswich on the Ipswich to Ely Line and Hitchin to Cambridge Line, with services continuing on to London Kings Cross via Hitchin.
Information on train services from Cambridge Station

- CrossCountry serve the station with their Birmingham New Street to Stansted Airport via Leicester and Peterborough service - using Class 170 Dmus.
- First Capital Connect serve the station with their London Kings Cross service - using Class 317 or Class 365 Emus.
- The "Cambridge Cruiser" operates non-stop between London Kings Cross and Cambridge.
- There are are also semi-fast trains between Cambridge and London Kings Cross calling at, Royston, Baldock, Letchworth, Hitchin, Stevenge and Finsbury Park.
- There is and hourly stopping service to London Kings Cross, stopping at all stations on the Cambridge-Hitchin portion of the line, then Stevenage, Knebworth, welwyn North, Welwyn Garden City, Hatfield, Potters Bar and Finsbury Park.
- Traveling northbound there are hourly FCC services to Fen Line stations, calling at Waterbeach, Ely, Littleport, Downham Market, Watlington and Kings Lynn.
- Off-peak these services run non-stop between Cambridge and London Kings Cross; during peak hours additional stops are often made.
National Express East Anglia serve the station with three routes:
- To London Liverpool Street via the West Anglian Main Line - using Class 317 emus.
- During morning peak some services start from Kings Lynn, during evening peak some are extended beyond Cambridge to Ely and Kings Lynn. On Sundays some services to not go to London Liverpool Street, instead calling at all stations to London Stratford via Tottenham Hale.
- A service between Cambridge and Norwich via the Breckland Line - using Class 170 Turbostar units.
- The Ipswich-Cambridge service - using Class 153, 156 and 170 dmus - One train a day continues onto Harwich International.
