Information on Brighton Station
The impressive Brighton terminus of the former London, Brighton & South Coast Railway accommodates three busy modern rail routes, the main line from London and coastal routes from the east and west of the resort. The goods yard area east of the station is now used for car parking but the railway works tradition is kept alive by Network Rail’s ECR and infrastructure maintenance depot on the Upside of the main line and Southern’s Lovers Walk Depot, used for servicing most of Southern’s single voltage Class 377 Electrostar fleet and Class 442s. The station itself, with two dramatic roof spans covering its surviving eight platforms, is approached from the east over the 27 arches London Road Viaduct which links the Lewes line and its traditional London Road station with the Brighton terminus.
Architect David Mocatta and engineer John Urpeth Rastrick created the viaduct for the 1846 Lewes line, the same partnership having built the station just over five years earlier. The main line had reached Brighton in 1841, following the opening of the Worthing line on 11 May of the previous year, and the Mocatta/Rastrick partnership had produced a station worthy of the Regency resort. From 1869 it was also to handle trains on the branch round to Thomas Read Kemp’s development at Kemp Town.
Approaching from Queens Road, the station seems dominated by the large porte-cochere which was added in a period of alterations in 1882-83. Above its decorated iron columns the upper storey and ornate clock gable of the Mocatta frontage remain uncluttered. The LB&SCR Board used to meet here, in front of the two great roof spans which replaced Rastrick’s originals in 1882-83 and look out over the town to the sea-front beyond.
A modern Travel Centre and ticket office have replaced Brighton’s traditional booking hall but once out on the concourse there is a reminder of the past in the ornate four-sided LB&SCR clock which hangs near the modern train indicator. Ahead, on the west side, a long platform curves beneath the high Terminus Road retaining wall to finish up pointing towards Hove Tunnel. On the east side the wooden platform 9 has been abandoned as the layout permits eastbound trains to use four lines in the central portion of the station.
Marks & Spencer occupy the western side of the concourse, the site had previously been occupied by fast food concessions and a bar.
WH Smith currently occupy an island site on the eastern side of the concourse, but will move into the ticket office are. The ticket office will be relocated from the main concourse into a new ticket office formed out of the old mens toilet block, with a new entrance from Trafalgar Street. The second floor of the station will open to the public, along with shops. There will also be a new bar on the east side of the concourse, all due for completion the end of 2010.
Information on train services from Brighton Station
Brighton provides fast and frequent connections to Gatwick Airport, London Victoria and Bedford which is via the Thameslink line through the City of London. During normal service, most trains to (and through) London use the Brighton main line to get there. Some trains also run via Salisbury and Bristol to Cardiff, avoiding the need to change trains in central London. Trains to Lewes and beyond leave Brighton station over the spectacular London Road Viaduct.
