Information on Bradford Forster Square Station

There have been several schemes to link the two Bradford stations but they remain separate, although not far apart and both close to the city centre.

The senior of the two locations is Forster Square, opened on 1 July 1846 when the trains of the Leeds & Bradford Railway began linking those two cities via Shipley and the valley of the River Aire. It increased in stature as the extension west from Shipley turned into a Midland Railway main line which was to carry its Scottish expresses.

The original L&B Market Street location was then rebuilt as Forster Square in 1890. With six platforms linked by an arcade to the frontage with its tall chimneys and small tower, the once-busy Forster Square was simplified in the mid-1970s. However in 1990 a new three-platform station was built somewhat to the north of the former station; the later was demolished two years later to make way for a £90 million shopping centre. That development was never built and the site remain derelict for some years and has only been used as a car park.

Part of the screen arcade that fronted the 1890 station remains, as does the Midland Hotel.

In 1994 the lines into Forster Square were electrified as part of the electrification of the Airedale Line and Wharfedale Line, and allowing through electric trains to London via the East Coast Main Line.
