Information on Bournemouth Station

Not large enough then to figure in the route planning of the 1847 Southampton & Dorchester Railway, Bournemouth did not get its own railway connection until 14 March 1870 when the Ringwood-Christchurch line was extended to a point just east of the present station.

Four years later a line was opened from Poole to Bournemouth West, prompting plans for a more direct approach from the Southampton direction and a link line between the two Bournemouth stations.

The original Bournemouth East station was replaced by the present one from 20 July 1885 and from 6 march of the following year the direct route from Brockenhurst and on through the town to a junction with the Poole line came into service. In 1899 Bornemouth East became Bournemouth Central. Bournemouth West, mainly used for a service over the S&D line to Brockenhurst and one to Wimbourne, was closed in 1965 and its approaches used to provide a carriage servicing depot for the electric services which began a year later.

The new station built by the LSWR in 1885 remains in use today, although with a refurbished roof and the central through lines taken up. It consists, essentially, of two long platforms with exceptionally high outer walls linked by 12 latticed roof support members, themselves supported by huge ornate brackets rising from solid buttresses. The Up side has a matching extension from the main facade, including ticket office inscribed 1885, and a single-storey arcade backing the enclosed, but now unused, No 1 bay. There are subway and footbridge links from the main Up platform (No 2) to the Down side (No 3), which is extended at the country end to form No 4 where the signal box is located beyond a trunk road over bridge. No 4 platform was used for local Down services prior to the introduction of the Wessex Electric through services from May 1988.

Bournemouth station is reached via access roads from Holdenhurst Road, along which local buses cover the 3/4 mile distance to the town centre and main beach area. The high walls in warm red brick make it an imposing location, contrasting with the modern design of an adjacent supermarket.

The station car park is built on the site of the former locomotive sheds to the west of the station.

The station is primarily served by South West Trains, who operate fast and semi-fast trains from Waterloo to Weymouth, and stopping services from London Waterloo to Poole. In addition, Cross Country operate services from Bournmouth to Manchester
. Connex South Central used to operate a London Victoria to Bournemouth service, but this was truncated at Southampton and is now operated by Southern. The service was one of the few regular services to use platform 1.
