Information on Bournemouth Airport

Bournemouth Airport is located 5 miles (8km) North East of Bournemouth on the South Coast of England. Life begin an on 1st August 1941 as RAF Hurn, in the  Borough of Christchurch Dorset. World War 2 saw the airfield used for paratroop training and in 1943 as a glider base before the troops heading for North Africa landings, 570 Squadron were also based at Hurn and their role was to drop agents and supplies to the French Resistance. The United States Army Air Forces used the base for preparations prior to D-Day and the subsequent Battle of Normandy. Hurn was also the home of RAF Second Tactical Air Force 84 Group with its nine squadrons of Typhoons.

In November 1944 British Overseas Airways Corporation moved its base from Bristol's Whitchurch aerodrome to Hurn, while awaiting the completion of Heathrow Airport which would open fully in 1948. Modified Lancaster Bombers know as Avro Lancastrians took three days from England to Australia and this was the starting point for this service.

1951 saw some ex-BOAC hangers taken over by Vickers-Armstrongs at Hurn airfield and production started on the following aircraft, Varsities, Viscounts and then the BAC One-Eleven, even some parts of Concorde were manufactured at Hurn, but in 1980 Bornemouth's role as a significant player in the aircraft construction industry ceased, with the site eventually becoming one of Dorset's largest industrial estates and a base for Flight Refueling Limited.

Dorset County Council and the Bournemouth Corporation jointly purchased Hurn airport in 1969 and renamed it "Bournemouth Airport", it was later to become Bournemouth International Airport. After the new owners developed the site in 1980, and European Aviation began services with chartered airlines.

Bournemouth Airport received its first regular passenger in 1993 with European Aviation Air Charter, EAC and Palmair. Manchester Airports Group, now the largest UK owned airport group acquired the site in March 2001, having previously been purchased by National Express Group. In 2005 Bournemouth was to be the hub for Thomsonfly, this being the first major low cost airline to establish itself in Dorset, with low cost scheduled flights to Europe and in 2008 to the Caribbean.
