Information on Bolton Station

Bolton was part af the great railway pioneering which took place in Lancashire and which culminated in the opening of the world's first inter-city line, that of the Liverpool & Manchester Railway, in 1830. George Stephenson had then already built the 7 3/4-mile Bolton & Leigh Railway, a tramroad which was worked by stationary engines and horses when it commenced operation in1828. By 1831 the B&L was connected  to the Liverpool & Manchester route and was using Stephenson locomotives to haul trains to and from a Bolton terminus at Great Moor Street. More direct routes between Great Moor Street and Manchester came into use in 1864 and 1875, when the station was rebuilt. It closed to passengers on 29 March 1954, apart from some Wakes Week traffic.

The first station on the Trinity Street site was that of the Manchester, Bolton & Bury Canal navigation & Railway which opened to a terminus there on 29 May 1838. The route was extended by Bolton & Preston Railway in 1843 and Bolton grew steadily in railway importance as further routes developed via Wigan, Blackburn and Bury, plus a branch to Astley Bridge. The Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway's four major routes from Bolton Trinity Street rather eclipsed the activities of its LNWR rival at Great Moor Street, although the later retained goods links with Manchester, Liverpool and Warrington.

Trinity Street station was rebuilt in 1903-4 in red brick  with domed cupolas and a clock tower, but its buildings have now been demolished and replaced by a new station access 100 yards away in Newport Street. There, modern buildings funded by BR and the Greater Manchester PTA and adjoining bus interchange depot were opened on 8 March 1987. They lead by footbridge to two island platforms which have buildings in dark and light glazed bricks, the main ones on the Down side rising in plainer form above the canopy.
The Down side bays are now filled in and only a terminating parcels line uses the outer face there. Preston line trains use the inner platform faces and those on the Blackburn line the two sides of the Up island, No 3 platform line being bi-directional.

Part of the station and its surrounding area underwent major refurbishment in 2005-6, with the walkway between the ticket office and platforms being modernised, this included the station lifts and stairs
