Information on Blackpool North Station

Blackpool North, the town's main station, uses the site of the first railway arrival, the Preston & Wyre Railway. That was back in 1846 when a branch from the Fleetwood line at Poulton was opened on 29 April to serve the seaside village that was eventually to become the leisure metropolis of the North West. A second railway reached Blackpool from Lytham on 6 April 1863, anticipating a period of development at the resort as it began to compete with Southport for the Wakes Week traffic of the mill towns. The third route, a direct line from Kirkham, increased still further the numbers of holiday makers and day trippers from 30 May 1903.

The railway approach from the South used a large terminus known as Blackpool Central, trains from Poulton running into another at Talbot Road (later Blackpool North), and those on the 1903 line using Waterloo Road, effectively today's Blackpool South. The volume of summer Saturday traffic necessitated extensive carriage sidings, two loco sheds and other support facilities. From 1895 visitors flocked to see Blackpool Tower, with even more arriving after the establishment of the 'illuminations' spectacle in the 1920s. The LYR introduced a system of travel regulation as early as 1919 in an attempt to cope with the massive numbers.

The BR rationalization era brought about the closure of Central station on 2 November 1964, the route via Lytham now terminating at the single platform of Blackpool South. This preceded by another single platform at Blackpool Pleasure Beach. The direct route from Kirkham then closed just over a year later, with the London services being concentrated on Blackpool North at the beginning of the 1970s and a new station being provided there in 1974. This made use of the former excursion platforms of the 1846 station, leaving the six shorter platforms for parking development areas. The surviving eight platforms are backed by a modern, rectangular facilities block in brick with a glazed roof section elevated on concrete angle beams. The shops and seafront are not far away and Britain's only surviving municipal tramway operates along the promenade.
