Information on Blackpool International Airport
 
Blackpool International Airport started it's life off as Squires Gate with its first flight back in October 1909, this was also an historic year as French Aviator Louis Bleriot made his inagural flight across the English Channel and Britain's first official major air show took place at Squires Gate, the home of Blackpool Airport.
The 1930's saw The airfield used by small UK airlines, and like a lot of the other airfields it was taken over by the RAF in 1939. Vickers built an aircraft production facility on the site and this was to see the production of 3,841 Wellington Bombers, and all were test flown from the present runways. 1949 saw the airfield renamed to Blackpool Airport and control was taken over by the Ministry of Civil Aviation. Hawker Hunter jet fighters were later produced in the mid 1950s at the North East edge of the airfield in the former WW2 factory.
1987 saw the birth of Blackpool International Airport as the airport was turned into a Private Limited Company, steady expansion has increased over the years attracting budget airlines on scheduled flights and British Gas Helicopter Operations, along with a thriving centre that accommodates private, club and general aviation.
Construction company Balfour Beatty who own Exeter Airport also have a 95% stake in Blackpool International Airport.
The airport is conveniently located at the end of the M55 which is also linked to the M6, M61 and M65 motorways.
