Information on Ashford Station
For a major junction location with five radiating routes. Ashford deals with its sizeable traffic load in a very unassuming manor. Compared with the 10 minutes required in steam days, Ashford regularly unites and seperates the Dover and Margate portions of the Charing Cross trains in unruffled 3 minutes. Its other Dover trains, plus those to Hastings and Ashford's own service to Charing Cross, are handled with similar lack of fuss at its modern functional four-platform station. The original mainline of the South Eastern Railway reached Ashford on 1 December 1842, pushed on to Folkestone in the following year and achieved its Dover target in 1844. Just three years later the growing South Eastern opened a locomotive works east of the station and subsequently added a wagon works as well, using sites adjoining the 1846 route to Margate. The Ashford locomotives works closed in 1962 and the BREL depot 22 years later, but the traction and stock maintenance is carried on at Chart Leacon
depot west of the station. Built on a former swamp at the time of the Kent Coast electrification, Chart Leacon repairs and overhauls a large volume of suburban rolling stock as well as doing locomotive an multiple unit work.
Rebuilt and enlarged in the early 1900s, rebuilt again in the 1960s, and then rebuilt again in 1995 after Private funding for the station rebuild was agreed in December 1993, International services using the platforms the following year. A noticeable emphasis was put on Airport Terminal design, to enhance the "international" feel about it, with the island platforms serving Eurostar. The main station entrance is to the north of the platforms, and like the platform buildings, is glass clad and built with airport terminal design in mind
.
Despite the transformation of the station area into an unrecognisable scene on two occasions, the original SER works of 1846 have, amazingly, remained virtually untouched and are now listed structures. The buildings are devoid of rail access, but one workshop is still in use for the restoration of preserved steam locomotives.
Ashford International now has its own recycling facility, falling in line with other popular locations such as Brighton Railway Station and Stansted Airport. The creditable new recycling facilities by Southeastern and Southern Railway companies will help to maintain a clean and responsible environment as Ashford International escalates in new rail customers and services.
Meanwhile Eurostar, aware of environmental requisites, are installing new trains, which also promise even higher speeds.
In September 2005 work commenced on the new Ashford Hitachi Depot and completed in 92 weeks to the cost of £52.9 million.
