Information on Aberdeen Airport

Aberdeen Airport is 7 miles Northwest of Aberdeen on the main A96 and situated in the suburbs Dyce, which is on the River Don. Aberdeen Airport opened in 1934 and was established by Eric Gander Gower who pioneered Scottish Airlines between Aberdeen and Edinburgh, Glasgow, Kirkwall, Stromness, Thurso and Wick, as well as the first British/Norwegian Air Line between Newcastle and Stavanger in 1937.  He also served in the RAF as a Flight Lieutenant from 1940 to 1943. The Airfield became a base for the Battle of Britain fighters to protect bombing raids from Norway although it was mainly used as a reconnaissance base for photographic aircraft. In 1947 the airport was Nationalised and BAA to control in 1975. Due to the oil industries close proximity the airports expansion took place in 1970. BP Oil had it's headquarters built in Dyce at the Airport. The train station at Dyce was reopened  in September 1984 after many years of closure to serve the Airport and the Oil rig workforce. A new rail freight depot was also built to the North of Dyce station and named "Raiths Farm", this is also linked to the Oil industry. A taxi rank operates between Dyce Station and Aberdeen Airport. The Airport is one of the 6 owned and operated by BAA, itself owned by the Spanish Ferrovial Group who head a consortium. Aberdeen Airport is also the third largest Airport in Scotland and in 2007 there was an increase in passengers of 7.8% with 3.41 Million passengers passing through the Airport.

Passenger flights are operated from the Main Terminal by BMI Regional, Eastern Airways and Scottish Low Cost Airline Flyglobespan who operate a Focus City, which the Airport industry calls a location that is not a hub, but where an airline can operate non-stop flights to various other destinations separate from its hubs.

North Sea Helicopter also operate from Aberdeen Airport and these are used by Bristo Helicopters, CHC-Scotia and Bond Offshore. Adjacent to the Main Terminal is Broomfield House a small terminal operated by Flightline and is used primarily for flights to Scatsta in Shetland on Oil company charter flights.
